Possible top 2020 pick James Wiseman’s NCAA eligibility in question

James Wiseman’s NCAA career isn’t over yet.

The Memphis freshman and potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft was ruled ineligible to play at the University of Memphis this season, according to his lawyer, Leslie Ballin, who was able to obtain an emergency restraining order, allowing Wiseman to play against Illinois-Chicago on Friday.

Tigers coach Penny Hardaway, considered by the NCAA to be a booster due to a 2018 donation to the school, helped the 7-foot Wiseman move from Nashville to Memphis in 2017, according to  Ballin.

In his lone game at the school, Wiseman posted 28 points and 11 rebounds over 22 minutes in a 97-64 win over South Carolina State.

Scouting reports tout Wiseman’s mobility and developed mid-range shot, as well as his hustle and instincts. He’s expected to be a top-five pick, with a ceiling as high as No. 1 overall.
